The Tragic Transformation Only 12 Months Has Made in America
Twelve months back, the environment was utterly distinct. Ahead of the national election, considerate Americans could admit America's serious imperfections – its injustices and imbalance – however they still could see it as the United States. A democracy. A land where legal governance held significance. A country led by a dignified and decent official, even with his elderly years and declining health.
These days, this autumn, numerous citizens scarcely know the nation we live in. Individuals suspected of being unauthorized foreigners are detained and shoved into transport, at times denied due process. The East Wing of the “people’s house” – is undergoing demolition for a grotesque event space. Donald Trump is harassing his adversaries or perceived antagonists and requesting federal prosecutors transfer an enormous amount of public funds. Uniformed troops are deployed across metropolitan centers under fabricated reasons. The military command, rebranded the Department of War, has practically rid itself of routine media oversight while it uses potentially totaling close to a trillion USD in public funds. Universities, law firms, journalism organizations are yielding due to presidential intimidation, and rich magnates are handled as nobility.
“The US, shortly prior to its 250th birthday as the planet's foremost free society, has tipped over the limit into autocracy and extremism,” Garrett Graff, commented recently. “Ultimately, swifter than I thought feasible, it did happen in America.”
Each day begins to new horrors. And it is challenging to understand – and agonizing to acknowledge – how deeply lost we are, and the speed at which it unfolded.
Yet, we understand that Trump was legitimately chosen. Despite his highly troubling previous administration and even after the alerts that came with the awareness of the conservative plan – despite the leader directly stated openly he intended to rule as a tyrant only on the first day – enough Americans selected him instead of his Democratic opponent.
As terrifying as the current reality are, it's more daunting to recognize that we’re only several months under this leadership. How will another 36 months of this decline find us? And suppose that timeframe transforms into something even longer, since there is not anyone to stop this leader from deciding that a third term is essential, maybe for defense purposes?
Admittedly, not everything is hopeless. We will have congressional elections next year which might establish an alternate balance of power, if Democrats recapture either chamber of Congress. There exist public servants who are trying to apply a degree of oversight, for example lawmakers that are launching an investigation regarding the effort to fund seizure by federal prosecutors.
And a national vote in 2028 could start our journey to recovery just as the prior selection placed us on this unfortunate course.
There exist countless citizens demonstrating in urban areas throughout communities, as they did recently at democracy demonstrations.
A former official, commented this week that “the great sleeping giant of the nation is awakening”, exactly as before following the Red Scare during the fifties or during the Vietnam war protests or during the Nixon controversy.
On those occasions, the unstable nation eventually was righted.
The author states he knows the signs of that resurgence and observes it occurring now. For proof, he points to the widespread marches, the extensive, cross-party resistance against a television host's removal and the near-unanimous defiance by media to agree to the defense department’s demands they solely cover approved content.
“The dormant force always remains asleep until specific greed turns extremely harmful, some action so disrespectful of societal benefit, specific cruelty so loud, that the giant is forced other than to stir.”
It's a positive outlook, and I value his knowledgeable stance. Possibly he may prove to be right.
Meanwhile, the major inquiries endure: will the nation ever recover? Can it retrieve its status in the world and its devotion to legal principles?
Or should we recognize that the historical project functioned for a period, and then – abruptly, completely – collapsed?
My negative thoughts tells me that the latter is true; that everything could be lost. My hopeful heart, however, convinces me that we have to attempt, in whatever ways we can.
For me, as a media critic, that involves pushing media professionals to commit, more completely, to their duty of scrutinizing authority. For others, it might involve working on political races, or coordinating protests, or finding ways to protect voting rights.
Not even one year prior, we lived in a separate situation. In the future? Or in several years? The truth is, we cannot predict. The only option is try to not give up.
