Celebratory Displays and a Toast to Life: Israeli Citizens Rejoice over Agreement Bringing Back Captives
The declaration of an agreement projected to result in the freeing of hostages held in the Gaza Strip for more than two years has generated delight and comfort across the nation.
A group which has campaigned for the return of Israeli captives in Gaza expressed “deep appreciation” for what it called a “landmark achievement”.
The deal—which still must be approved by Israel’s war cabinet—will see the return of 20 hostages alive and the bodies of 28 dead hostages in exchange for 250 Palestinian prisoners imprisoned for life in Israeli prisons and 1,700 detainees from the Gaza region.
To date, 148 hostages have come back—largely through previous ceasefire deals—51 bodies have been retrieved and eight hostages were freed by rescue.
Celebratory Moments in Hostages’ Square
Joyous gatherings took place at Hostages Square located in Tel Aviv as hundreds of people assembled ahead of the agreement’s signing.
The gathering began clapping and dancing under US and Israeli flags—a female attendee holding up a sign that read: “We adore Trump.”
“This is a wondrous day,” the woman said.
A different person, Yael, aged 50, cried while observing the people celebrating.
“I am thrilled—it’s such a relief,” she stated. “We need to see them come back home to their families.”

Families Celebrate Using Pyrotechnics
The mother and sister of a captive Israeli Matan Zangauker lit fireworks to mark the news of his impending homecoming.
“They’re coming back!... Matan is on his way home!” Einav Zangauker said while holding her daughter.
Viki Cohen, the parent of captive Israeli Nimrod Cohen, posted on social media: “My son, you are returning home.”
The joy could be felt throughout the avenues of Tel Aviv after the news.
Freed Hostages Offer Prayers and Toasts
Former British-Israeli hostage Emily Damari rejoiced alongside another released captive Romi Gonen, reciting prayers of gratitude, then cheering “To life”, meaning “to life”. She has advocated for the release of her companions, twins Gali and Ziv Berman.
Their sibling Liran Berman posted: “My dear Gali and Ziv, I adore you. You’re coming home.”
Gil Dickman’s cousin Carmel Gat was taken hostage on 7 October 2023, and her body recovered from a tunnel in Gaza almost a year later. He has participated with other captives’ relatives in advocating for a deal which ensures the return of everyone still detained within Gaza.
“I hardly believe this is real. We have waited for so long and here it is,” he said.
He stated he felt “shattered” that his cousin would not be among those returning home but was “glowing with joy” for the relatives of the captives who are at last returning.
Eitan Horn was taken from kibbutz Nir Oz in Israel’s south together with his sibling.
Guarded Hope from Relatives
Dalia Cusnir, whose relative by marriage Eitan Horn is still held in Gaza, remarked she experienced as if she were in “a dream state”.
“We are immensely thankful to the President and all he has done for us. It seems like it might be the start of the conclusion of this ordeal, and hugging Eitan seems nearer than ever,” she said.
But she cautioned that it was still too early to celebrate.
“Until the last hostage is here, we won’t open the bubbly. We’re going to keep fighting... until it’s over,” she said.
“So many things might occur up to the final instant which is why we are extremely cautious. We simply wish to thank everyone who participated in the work and ensure this deal is finalized... We will celebrate only once we have the last hostage safely home.”
Eitan was taken from Nir Oz kibbutz in Israel’s south together with his sibling Iair, who was released from detainment in a ceasefire deal earlier in the year.
