At least 64 Fatally Wounded in Rio de Janeiro's Most Extensive Law Enforcement Operation on Gangs
No less than 64 individuals were killed in a law enforcement action cracking down on the Red Command gang in the Brazilian city's northern suburbs - the largest and deadliest raid in the Brazilian state's records.
Four law enforcement personnel were included in the fatalities during the security mission in the communities of Alemão and Penha, local authorities reported. In excess of 80 people were taken into custody.
Fierce clashes broke out when around 2,500 police forces initiated the operation on the morning of the operation. The criminal organization responded with shooting, igniting obstacles and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, officials said.
The UN Human Rights Office said it was "horrified" by the police operation, demanding "prompt and effective investigations".
Raid Aftermath
The area of favelas near Rio's airport is seen as the central command of one of Brazil's most powerful illegal networks.
State officials stated at least 50 of the fatalities were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".
Many residents were wounded, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.
Community Response
Community members have likened the elevated neighborhood - home to about 300,000 residents - to a "combat area" since the operation began.
Transport routes stay blocked in the entire neighborhood.
Organized Crime Spread
The criminal network has been growing their influence in the area, growing illegal substance trade paths and control of the hillside favelas.
Security forces said in excess of 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were confiscated in the operation, along with multiple guns.
Mission Context
The coordinated mission by civil and military police follows a extended probe.
Many of the individuals are considered members of a faction from the Brazilian state who are currently hiding in Rio de Janeiro.
Larger Framework
Large-scale police operations are not uncommon in Brazil ahead of important worldwide conferences in the South American nation.
The UN climate summit COP30 is taking place in the city of Belem in the north in the eleventh month.
